LATE in July, 1908, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in a communication to The Christian Science Board of Directors, expressed the desire that a daily newspaper be forthwith established in Boston, Massachusetts, under the auspices of the Christian Science movement. Although such an announcement had been hoped for, and had been considered a future possibility, it came unexpectedly and with surprise, even to some of those close to our Leader. She had taken her usual course, however, of thinking and working patiently and silently until the demonstration had been made, and then acting quickly and decisively.
Immediately following the receipt of this communication, the Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society were notified of Mrs. Eddy's expressed wish, and were instructed to take action accordingly. This led to the prompt calling of a conference in the former Publishing House in Boston, in which the writer of these pages, because of his experience in journalism, was among those invited to participate. At the initial session of this conference, after its object had been stated by the chairman of the Trustees, it was announced that Mrs. Eddy had further signified a desire that the first number of the new daily should be issued on the Wednesday preceding the ensuing Thanksgiving Day—to be specific, on November 25, 1908.
The date set for its first publication was therefore less than four months distant. To human sense compliance with this latter requirement seemed impossible. An enterprise which would ordinarily demand at least a year of preparation was to be launched in less than one third of that time. Human belief held and attempted to prove that this could not be done. But Mrs. Eddy was not dealing with or counting upon mere human sense, and those to whom she had intrusted the working out of her plan soon found that they were being led toward a striking demonstration of the great spiritual fact that nothing good is or can be impossible of accomplishment in Christian Science, if divine Principle be adhered to.
