"DISEASE is an experience of so-called mortal mind," writes Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 493 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." And she adds, "Christian Science takes away this physical sense of discord, just as it removes any other sense of moral or mental inharmony." The correctness of our Leader's statement has been demonstrated by her and by her followers in the healing of all manner of sin and disease, according to the rules she has laid down. This has been brought about through an understanding that God is the only cause and creator; that all He has created is good; that man in the image and likeness of God expresses God, and lives above and beyond the beliefs of physicality and mortality, notwithstanding the contrary testimony of the five senses.
Through a knowledge of Christian Science, which is exact Science based on the truth that God is all-in-all, it is clearly seen that the beliefs of the five physical senses are deceiving, misleading, and void of power, having no Truth to sustain them—thus being unable to bear reliable testimony as to God, man, and the universe. Contrary to the testimony of these senses, which exercise dominion over mankind, mankind should have dominion over them. One thus finds that his happiness and well-being are not dependent upon the material senses, but upon God, who is man's guide, protector, and controller.
In presenting Christian Science to this age Mrs. Eddy made it plain that this Science came to her through a scientific revelation of the Scriptures, the Bible being her only textbook. Through her uplifted consciousness she perceived that God, divine Mind, alone is cause, and every effect an emanation of this cause, expressing good, and only good. Therefore, she pronounced erroneous thinking to be but the product of the carnal or fleshly mind, which claims the power and ability to produce evil and disaster. Christian Science, however, brings to light the fact that God is the only Mind, and that man, being God's image and likeness, possesses the ability, through reflection, always to give expression to health, strength, poise, peace, harmony, and happiness. Upon this basis of spiritual truth, everyone with thought open to perceive and to hear, can prove for himself and others that, whatever the material senses lay claim to, they can accomplish nothing real, because their assumed power is the result of wrong thinking, the outcome of the so-called carnal mind, which is void of power because it has not a single quality of God, good, to sustain it.
