DIVINE LOVE GOVERNS THE UNIVERSE

From the September 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IT took long years, long centuries, for men to discover that God is Love. But the discovery was made at last. The material senses had argued, as they still argue, for evil and the effects of evil. They had continually suggested to mortals that evil in all its forms is real; that sin, disease, suffering, sorrow, and death are real. And each time the argument or suggestion was accepted, men believed that a power other than Love governed the universe. For how could Love be governing, they thought, when so much that seemed the very opposite of the nature of Love appeared to be in evidence!

Jesus' teachings show clearly that he understood God to be Love. Running through them is repeated reference to God as Father, as for example in his prayer—the Lord's Prayer —where he appeals to "our Father which art in heaven." And how vividly he portrays the nature of the Father as Love when he tells of His care of the sparrow, speaks of His clothing the beauteous lilies of the field, and says that by Him "the very hairs of your head are all numbered"! What the Master obviously meant to convey was the fact that God regards His entire creation with infinite tenderness, a thing possible only to infinite Love.

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, delighted to dwell on the truth that God is Love; and often she makes reference to it in her writings, pointing out its tremendous significance to the children of men. In an article entitled "Love" in "Miscellaneous Writings" she writes on pages 249 and 250: "What a word! I am in awe before it. Over what worlds on worlds it hath range and is sovereign! the underived, the incomparable, the infinite All of good, the alone God, is Love." Those who have correctly grasped the fundamentals of Christian Science are becoming more and more appreciative of these words of their Leader. Gradually, as divine Truth dispels the false beliefs of the carnal mind, they are realizing the importance of the marvelous facts that God is Love, that Love holds sway everywhere in God's universe, that in reality only divine Love exercises power or dominion anywhere.
