It is nearly thirty years since a very dear friend became interested in Christian Science, and so sure was she that it was the truth that she rarely passed by my house without coming in to tell me of some wonderful healings and experiences that had come to her. I was not very easily convinced, for my doctors had been so much with me and so much to me. Scarcely a month went by that they were not called several times to our home for some member of our family, and quite often for myself, as I was suffering at that time from attacks of gallstones.
So very positive was my friend that Christian Science reveals the truth that makes us free, that I began to think over all the things she told me; and before very long we bought the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Not long after this I was taken suddenly very ill with pneumonia. Our doctor was called, and also a trained nurse, who had spent many weeks with me at different times in the years gone by, and whom we regarded as one of our family.
Almost from the first I was unconscious. Our doctor came four or five times daily, and soon asked that a specialist be called; which was immediately done. On leaving, all he could say was, "While there's life there's hope." Suddenly I became conscious just for a few moments and called my nurse to me and said: "I know I am very ill, and I know what you all think; but I want to try Christian Science, for I must live. Think how my children need me. Will you please write to my friend and ask her to work for me in Christian Science?" I then knew no more, but she did as I requested her and carried the letter to my friend at once.
