Christian Science was first brought to my attention in 1910. At that time the seed of Truth was sown in my consciousness, but it did not bear much fruit until 1917, when I turned whole-heartedly to Christian Science after passing through very deep waters. I was suffering physically from a spinal condition, the result of a fall. I was in a very inharmonious home, and had drunk deeply of the cup of bitterness and disappointment. "Man's extremity" was truly "God's opportunity." I then bought the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and for five months the Bible and the textbook were my daily and almost constant companions. During that time, while solely in search of understanding to know God aright, I was completely healed of the spinal trouble. However, I was not taken out of the inharmonious environment until I refused to speak evilly of the one who seemed to be causing the inharmony, and stopped courting sympathy from others.
Another healing I am most grateful for is that of an internal condition which caused much suffering at times. On one occasion while in the Capitol at Washington, District of Columbia, I was taken suddenly with the pain. As I tried to realize the truth, the thought came: If you are spiritual, you are not subject to any material condition, and you are free from this disorder through that very fact. I was free for the rest of the afternoon. A few days later, although no pain presented itself, the fear of it did; but I held my position with the above-stated truth. This was over eleven years ago, and the healing has remained permanent.
As a mother I wonder how it would be possible to live without Christian Science, which proves invaluable in solving the various problems that are presented to a mother. On one occasion a playmate bit one of my children. Infection set in, the head and face were very greatly swollen, and the child was blind for a day as a result of the swelling. In three days there was no evidence whatever of the trouble, and the child was healed. I have been healed of a misplaced vertebra, an infected hand, and also of discontent; for which I am most grateful.
