I was a prisoner in the flesh, bound on all sides by false doctrines and worshiping false gods. That the power of materia medica was greater than God's power I did not question, thus ignorantly breaking the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." From a small child I had "suffered many things." A family physician of the homeopathic school had tried in many ways to relieve an extreme case of kidney trouble. In his extremity he applied what he called a "fly blister," and the remedy proved more terrible than the disease. It left me in a more pitiable condition than before, for this suffering brought on chorea, which lasted for several years.
Never once did I give up my childlike faith in a good God, who would sometime, somehow, send me the peace and health and love which I had always sought but could not realize was here for me to accept if I would but follow Christ, Truth. Thus, it was not to be wondered at that I should respond to a significant telegram from my father in Iowa, and hasten to see for myself what this cure—Christian Science—might be which he said he would "guarantee." Physicians had experimented with me for thirty years and I had been finally turned over to a specialist in pulmonary diseases, who corroborated the verdict of two other physicians that I should have to live in a climate suited to tubercular diseases and have a complete rest, and even then I might not be able to return to my home in the Pacific Northwest.
After reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and having one treatment from a practitioner, a loyal student of Christian Science, I was healed. I not only returned to the forbidden climate, but was restored to my family in perfect health, and continued to minister to their daily needs, strengthened to meet even "the last enemy," when later our baby, who was a year and a half old, was given only a few hours to live. One of the physicians was her own father. After three months of experimenting the doctors had declared that they had exhausted their skill to save her. It was at this time that I asked her father to try Christian Science for her, which he lovingly did. We called the practitioner for treatment. A moment after he began to talk to me, he calmed my fears about "the last enemy," and the healing was instantaneous. Whereas the little one had been in convulsions, she became quiet and slept, and the next day she called for food. My thought had been changed from a material to a spiritual basis. The practitioner voiced the truth about her, and I substituted in my consciousness the spiritual idea of God's creating. The healing was instantaneous and complete.
