Testimonies of Healing

It is a glad privilege to be able to...

From the November 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is a glad privilege to be able to testify to the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science. I first heard of it thirty years ago, at a time when I had been in bondage to sickness and depression for three years. At the age of nineteen my weight was only eighty-four pounds, and I could not take solid food without suffering intense pain. Many physicians were visited and the case was diagnosed as nervous and hereditary weakness, one physician stating that I could not live long. In my persistent efforts to find health I tried dieting systems, electrical treatment, physical culture, so-called mental science, and took quantities of patent medicines. Every one of these means failed me, leaving me in a hopeless and discouraged state. While at this stage, one day I visited a public reading room and came across an article on Christian Science in one of the London daily papers. This gave me a gleam of hope, for the writer stated that Christian Science was a religion which was restoring health and happiness to vast numbers of men and women in all parts of the world. Through this article I came in touch with a Christian Scientist who most patiently and lovingly helped me. Through the prayers of this faithful worker and my study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, my health was completely restored in a very short time.

For thirty years now I have relied on Christian Science and have not tasted medicine; nor have I had a full day in bed with sickness. During the late war I was passed by the doctors as "Grade 1." For the blessing of health which Christian Science has brought me I have, therefore, deep cause for thankfulness. But I have received through this Christly teaching vastly more than physical healing. In times of sorrow and loss, hardship and loneliness, it has always proved a refuge and consolation, a guide and comforter, always beckoning me on to follow the Christ-way, to overcome sin and self, and to rejoice in the certainty that here and now God's love and power are present and available.

Previous to my healing I had been a worker in one of the orthodox churches, and I shall always be grateful for the deep sincerity and consecrated lives of those with whom I came in contact who were seeking to live God's truth to the highest they knew; but I felt dissatisfied, and vaguely longed to know the God who was able to save not only from sin, but also from sickness. In Christian Science I have found this true concept of God, and the Bible has become a book of rich treasure, the truths of which are to be loved and lived. I am grateful that through the teachings of Christian Science, the Christ-way to complete freedom is made plain, and the priceless gifts of God's love, the heritage of all His children, are revealed. I am grateful to the loving Father, "from whom all blessings flow;" to Christ Jesus, the one and only Way-shower; and to Mrs. Eddy, our brave and beloved Leader, the clear channel for God's truth to this age.—
