The first time I remember thinking much about Christian Science was after a lady spoke to me on an elevated train regarding the possibility of Christian Science healing my small son, who was unable to talk as he had what the doctors called paralysis of the throat. Some months after this, on my way to the city to a hospital for a second operation, I was led to go to the home of a friend who is a Christian Science practitioner. After a two days' stay in my friend's home I was healed of the drug habit, and also of a cyst tumor. Our small son was healed of the throat condition later through this same friend's help.
In the past seventeen years we have had many healings, among which are those of pneumonia, blood poisoning, and an eye condition of which I should like to write. Our youngest son threw a shoe awl. It struck a hard-wood stump and, bounding back, entered his left eye, piercing clear to the bone. I was not at home when it happened, and he called me on the telephone. I told him I would work for him and would return home soon. Having been a nurse, I realized upon looking at the eye that to sense it was in a serious condition. The practitioner who had formerly helped us was called, and I was told to clear my own thought. Much fear was expressed by those around us, so the next morning I took my son to the city to a hospital for an examination. The specialist there informed me that the eye would have to be removed the following day. When the time came, however, one of the doctors who knew we were having Christian Science help, told me that Christian Science was doing more than they could do and to keep on with it. Accordingly, the operation was not performed. The condition of the eye improved so rapidly that it was a marvel to the doctors, who watched it with interest. In eight days the boy was released from the hospital; and after several months of total blindness in that eye, the sight returned. Ten months later, in applying for admission to a school, the boy was examined by five doctors and each commented on the eye condition as wonderful. The eye specialist whom we consulted at the time of the accident thanked us for having been permitted to watch this healing.
I am indeed grateful for all these signs of Immanuel, or "God with us," for the periodicals and the activities of our church, and for the loving practitioner, who stood so firmly for the truth. I am also grateful for class instruction from a loyal student of Mrs. Eddy, for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church. I can never be thankful enough to God for giving our Leader this revelation with which to bless mankind.—Roslindale, Massachusetts.
