When I was very small I heard the preachers say much about water baptism. My thought was kept busy searching for the truth, as I had a great desire to be a Christian as soon as I was old enough; but how was I to know when I was a Christian? This was in my thought a great deal of the time. I could not understand baptism as I so often heard it explained from the pulpit. I asked every learned person I was with about baptism. Some would kindly tell me what they thought. Some would say, "Wait, child, until you are older;" but I could not lay it down, I wanted to know. I searched wherever an opportunity presented itself to find out the meaning of "water." One day I was reading the Gospel of John, fourth chapter, and in the thirteenth and fourteenth verses I found my answer; and I was ever at peace on that subject.
A short while later, after the doctors had lovingly done all they could and had rendered a sad verdict about those near and dear to me, while the cloud seemed dark, yet something told me that behind this cloud the light was shining; and I searched for it. Shortly after this we received a letter from a relative who had been healed in Christian Science, telling us of the healing. The two words "Christian Science" stood out much larger than any other words in the letter, and seemed to me the sweetest I had ever heard.
Although we lived three miles from the little village where we got our mail, there was no time lost in sending a letter to ask more about Christian Science. In a few days we had a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This book was read by others during the day and I read it at night, and sometimes into the morning. In a short time the loved ones were restored to health.
