Testimonies of Healing

From the August 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I wish to submit an account ofa healing which I experienced. One morning I was awakened withdistressing symptoms of nausea and indigestion. It had been my declared intention to attend a Christian Science lecture that evening, and I was immediately aware that error was trying to keep me from the truth which I knew from previous experience the lecture would have for me. I did my mental work accordingly, and was able to go about my business duties of the day in a fairly comfortable way until the middle of the afternoon. when I had finished the day's routine and had a little time in which to think about myself. Then the difficulty came on me with all its fury, and with accompanying suggestions which were very aggressive, that I give up the idea of attending the lecture; that I should be much more comfortable at home and in bed. I kept knowing the truth that this manifestation of sickness was a lie, and persisted in keeping on my feet, resisting the suggestion that I give in to this lie.

I reached the lecture hall still considerably distressed. However, in less than fifteen minutes after the lecture began I had lost all thought of illness. The words of the lecturer filled my consciousness with the truth of the presence of God; and the next thing I realized was a great sense of spiritual uplifting, as I listened to a beautiful portrayal of the power of prayer to heal, the lecturer quoting Jesus' words, "For your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him." This was a very definite proof to me of the healing power of the Word, audibly expressed.

I have had other signs of the efficient action of divine Principle, Truth, in healing disease. My first visit to a Christian Science practitioner was occasioned merely by a desire to learn what power there could be—other than drugs, diet, exercise, hygiene, or surgery—which could restore my wife's health, as I had seen Christian Science do after these material systems had failed. I became sufficiently interested during this interview to ask for help for my eyes, for which I had worn glasses over five years. I was instantaneously healed, and have never worn glasses since. In the same treatment I was healed of fallen arches. I did not mention the name of this last disorder, nor did I ask for specific help for fallen arches. In one Christian Science treatment, as it were, with very little faith in God and no understanding of Christian Science, I was healed from the top of my head to the soles of my feet. The only thing I contributed to this healing was a simple willingness to try something which I knew had met another's need.

I am profoundly grateful to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. A life less pure than hers could not have received this revelation. Less love for humanity could not have endured the persecution and loneliness which were her lot in establishing the Cause of Christian Science. Only a consciousness with the least sense of self could be so open to God as to receive the wisdom and foresight expressed in the Rules and By-Laws in the Manual of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, which protects this truth and preserves it to mankind, free from the contaminating and adulterating influences of human hypotheses and personalities. —
