Testimonies of Healing

Mere words cannot express my...

From the October 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mere words cannot express my gratitude for Christian Science, which was brought to me by a loving practitioner almost seven years ago. I knew very little about this Science and was eager to have it explained. She asked me if I wished to read the Lesson with her, explaining that the Lesson-Sermon found in the Christian Science Quarterly was read every day by Christian Scientists and by those desiring to become Christian Scientists. My eyes were opened when she explained what God is and man's relation to Him. I thought I knew something about God, as I had been teaching Sunday school classes since I was sixteen; but I found I knew very little. I always thought God sent sickness to punish us for our sins, and that we had to bear that punishment as long as God saw fit; so I had a real awakening when I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.

My whole life has been changed spiritually and physically. At the time Christian Science was brought to me I had been annoyed for seventeen years with an itching of the skin which the doctor said was caused by an acid condition of the blood; he said that all I could do for it was to apply a weak solution of carbolic acid. I explained all this to the practitioner and she told me I could be healed; so I asked her for help. My healing was slow, for I needed to change my old way of thinking and living entirely in order to help bring about this healing. Since then I have been healed of an ingrowing toenail which was in very bad condition, and which had been operated on twice before I came into Christian Science. I have also been healed of chronic tonsillitis and a badly sprained foot and ankle.

However, to me the most marvelous healing was accomplished four years ago. At that time I discovered a lump on my left breast about the size of a large walnut, and immediately a great fear of cancer took possession of me. I called a practitioner for help, and in a week's time the pain subsided, but after three months' treatment the lump was still there. After a long talk with the practitioner I decided I was depending entirely on her for a healing and was not doing my own mental work. So I gave up having treatment and started to work in earnest, determined to do my work so thoroughly that I should be healed. In less than a month the lump disappeared.
