From the time I was a little child I suffered much from rheumatism in my back and head, which caused severe headaches and much pain in the eyes, so I was unable to read for any length of time without suffering. I had to do much walking in the open air and a great deal of sport. I tried several doctors, spent some time at a sanatorium, had treatment from a homeopath, but all in vain. At last a doctor told me that I had inherited the rheumatism, and it would only grow worse as time passed.
In 1920 I went to America, and the first thing given to me when I arrived in New York was "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At first this book seemed so deep and difficult to understand that I did not feel inclined to study it at all. After a while I began to feel very homesick, and many different troubles came upon me. Then a deep longing for an understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him came to me. The words from the Bible, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," were often pondered. I wanted very much to be free and happy, so what I needed was to know the truth.
With the help of a dictionary I took up an earnest study of Science and Health, and in my longing to know more of God and of His infinite love I found myself reading for about four or five hours every day without having any headache or pain in my eyes. I was completely healed. I had no treatment, but the revelation of the Christ had come to me through the reading of this divinely inspired book.
