ON page 402 of the Christian Science textbook Mrs. Eddy says, "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged." I am therefore submitting the following testimony as a token of my gratitude for a demonstration of the efficacy of Christian Science to mend broken bones.
When I had been interested in this Science for only about six months I was working on a scaffolding which collapsed, precipitating me about twelve feet onto a concrete floor. I was removed to the local general hospital, seemingly in great pain, where I was examined and informed that I had a broken ankle. The following day an X-ray photograph confirmed this, and I was told that as soon as the swelling subsided the bone would be set, and that after about six weeks I should be allowed to go about with crutches and should be able to leave the hospital. I should have to return daily for examination and massage, but if progress were satisfactory I should probably be able to discard the crutches after another six weeks.
In the meantime, however, I asked for Christian Science treatment, which was lovingly given. On the third day the practitioner asked me if I was willing to take my stand and leave the hospital, as he considered that my recovery would be hastened if I were in a better atmosphere. Up to this time the doctors had done nothing to my foot, nor did they or any other human agency at any time set the bone. When I told them that I was having Christian Science treatment and desired to leave the hospital they were indignant and tried to make me change my decision, declaring that I was a lunatic and would probably be a cripple for the rest of my life; and when, eventually, they let me go, I had to sign a paper absolving them and the hospital from blame in the case of any ill effects. Within eight days of leaving the hospital I was able to walk about with a stick, and after a further ten days to discard this as well. I am thankful to say that the healing has been both perfect and permanent. I have also been healed of chronic indigestion.
