WHAT WE ARE

From the August 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What joyous relief we experience when, through Christian Science, we understand that it is not necessary to plead with God to favor us, or to try to help Him do what we think is needful. His work is done, and it is our happy privilege to accept that fact and rely upon Him; to let it become living truth to us that God governs all through immutable laws, and that we, His children, are under His laws, and through them are partaking of abundant supply to meet our every need. This spiritual truth recognized in true living, in moving and having our being in our rightful home, divine Mind, enables us to know that we really live in spiritual consciousness; that we are spiritually mental, not subject to physical discord, but masters of our own thoughts and consequently of the body. God is All-in-all; so all that is, is pure, healthy, and harmonious. The false beliefs of man as material are illusions, beliefs devoid of reality. God, who created man, can surely be trusted to care for His own. He protects and heals us, removing wrong thoughts from our consciousness by revealing to us man's true identity as the perfect reflection of Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love.

On page 505 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy has written, "The divine Mind, not matter, creates all identities, and they are forms of Mind, the ideas of Spirit apparent only as Mind, never as mindless matter not the so-called material senses." So much time and thought is given by mankind to material things that the reality of life in Spirit is often too little considered. The fact that God, Principle, is supreme, demands of us that we study the nature of His universe. God being Spirit, all that is created by Spirit expresses and constitutes spirituality. So spiritual existence is life in God. Every material thought or thing is opposed to, therefore outside of, spiritual existence. Consequently, to know the truth that makes free we must minimize materiality and magnify spirituality in our consciousness, for our present consciousness of good is what we now know about our true selves.

When we consciously reflect divine Love there is a spiritual warmth, a pure tenderness of feeling; it is the confident sense of divine power, wherein is no materiality, but only the pure strength of infinite Mind, divine intelligence. Great comfort is found in this recognition of the all-embracing scope of divine Love. Never is an idea of Mind separated for even a second from the warmth and strengthening power of God's loving care and protection. Not the slightest sense of error or the strongest claim of evil or disease can mar or stain the purity of man, for man is the precious reflection of God, divine Love. Man who is made in His image is a far cry from the distorted belief of man who is under the domination of mortal mind.
