A PRAYER

From the November 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Dear Father, when the way seems hard, and clouds
Of doubt and fear across my path may fall,
I pray that I may know Thy guiding hand
Is closer to me still, and governs all.

Unfold my life in Thine own way, I pray,
A life of loving service may it be.
Teach me the beauty of humility,
Of self-forgetfulness and purity.

And make my consciousness a holy place,
Washed clean from all resentment, pride, and sin,
Free from all earthly taint of selfishness,
A place where angel thoughts may enter in.

I do not pray that, as Thou leadest me,
My mortal eye can always trace the way,
But that I may have faith to follow Thee,
Until there dawns for me the perfect day.
