Frequently one hears among business acquaintances the timeworn query, "Are you making a living these days?" To human sense this seems to be the paramount question. From the standpoint of Christian Science, however, "making a living" is viewed in an entirely different light. Instead of meaning in all too many instances simply the unhappy effort to maintain oneself or one's family, while involved in drudgery, depression, and discouragement, it means learning that one's real existence, the manifestation of harmony and happiness, is sustained by God.
As Christian Scientists we do not depend primarily on material things for our sustenance, but rely for our life, our absolute living, on God, omnipotent Mind, who "saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." This coincides with the rule given us by our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, when he said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
Too often we are inclined to seek material "things" first and then wonder why the kingdom of God is not made evident in our experience. By obeying the command to love God supremely we cognize true substance and invariably find the needed "things" added. This is the law of God, since He, being the only cause and creator, provides all the life there is. God having made all and having called it good, our living is already established. Our only task is to understand and prove this great fact. Thus we may manifest abundant substance and realize our existence to be at the very standpoint of supply. Expressing God does not include the slightest inertia, for since He is omniactive and, as Mrs. Eddy says, "rests in action" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 519), that which reflects Him is active and manifests the ever-presence of divine Mind.
