When I first heard of Christian Science, about twenty years ago, I attended some of the Wednesday evening meetings, read the textbook with avidity, and even experienced a case of personal healing. I had suffered some time from severe neuritis and was completely cured by a single treatment from a practitioner. It was not, however, till five years later that I turned absolutely to Christian Science, and realized to the full how it meets all our needs.
I was ill and unhappy, and had been overworking. I had not been to a church service for a long time, nor had I studied the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and I thought how foolish I had been. I felt sure that Christian Science could heal me. It did not seem at all easy to leave my duties and go to church, but one Wednesday evening I made the effort and went to the testimony meeting. The reading from the desk seemed chosen specially for me. It included this verse from Isaiah: "They that wait upon the Lord . . . shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint." Mrs.Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 218), "The meaning of that passage is not perverted by applying it literally to moments of fatigue." I went home healed. Weariness and backache left, and they never returned. The next day I did twice as much as usual without fatigue.
From that time on I never looked back. I attended church regularly, sent my little daughter to the Sunday school, and studied the Lesson-Sermons. By degrees I changed my thinking. My character improved; I became less fearful, less suspicious, more loving and tolerant. And so my life became happier and more useful.
