With the full realization of the many benefits experienced through the study and application of Christian Science, I had a great desire to help in the movement. I therefore sought membership in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. To make this demonstration, however, it was necessary for me to give up smoking, and having tried several times unsuccessfully to eliminate this vicious habit by the use of so-called will power, I decided to visit a practitioner. Doubtfully, I asked if it would be possible to be healed of smoking and was answered promptly and confidently, "Nothing is impossible to God." Two citations from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy were given me to read: "His [man's] birthright is dominion, not subjection" (p. 518), and, "Puffing the obnoxious fumes of tobacco, or chewing a leaf naturally attractive to no creature except a loathsome worm, is at least disgusting" (p. 407).
The treatment resulted in an instantaneous healing, so complete that the fear of ridicule by friends was entirely removed, and only admiration was ever voiced by them. To anyone in bondage to this habit, let me say that there are no words adequate to describe the glorious freedom of a simple and permanent healing through Christian Science.
Through my own understanding of Science and with the patient and loving help of practitioners, problems of every sort have been harmoniously met in our home. The joy of seeing spiritual growth in a child as a result of Sunday School attendance and the scientific working out of the many problems arising with his development are something almost too sacred to be voiced.
