In 1929 I was confused as to where to send our three young children to church or Sunday School. My husband and I were of two opposite faiths. This divided thinking, I felt sure, was a house divided against itself and would not stand. The church to which my mother had sent me became offensive to my reasoning. My husband agreed that his church had nothing for us. I prayed constantly to be led to do what was right, for I knew it was important to bring up the children in a religion which they would love and through which they could serve God.
During this anxious time a dear friend was healed in Christian Science of tuberculosis, after he had suffered for many years in spite of the best medical care. His wife, knowing of my extremity, invited me to a Christian Science lecture. My husband and I attended, and we were both impressed. To me it was the first holy hour I had ever experienced. I felt that I was alone in the auditorium and that the words from the lecture platform were being directed to me. I did not hear another sound. This lecture was our awakening to the truth as taught in Christian Science, the truth about a perfect God, a perfect man, and a perfect universe. We knew that it was answered prayer. This then was the religion we were seeking for our family, a religion that we could follow and bring into the lives of our children, and we had no doubt that they would love it. W e all began to attend the services the very next Sunday.
In all these years we have been blessed beyond expression. Christian Science has solved all our ills, both mental and physical. We held on unflinchingly, with Love alone as our guide to harmony. The definition of "Church" on page 583 of the textbook, Science and Health by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, was utilized as a foundation for right reasoning in all our activities in the home, church, school, and business.
Our oldest boy, when a senior in high school, became ill with a foot infection. He called his Sunday School teacher, who was a Christian Science practitioner, and asked for help. Up to this time he had had a perfect attendance record at school, so staying at home looked like a holiday. For days he listened to his favorite bands on the radio. During this time he did not do any reading of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly or of Christian Science literature, to help him clear his thinking. The foot condition grew worse and seemed beyond endurance. It was pointed out to the boy that while it was pleasant to listen to music, he had not spent one minute in right thinking to help bring about the healing which he needed so much. He realized his mistake and asked for his books, the Bible and the Christian Science textbook. He also asked to be left alone. After a few hours of consecrated effort, in conjunction with the practitioner's loving service, he came out of the bedroom healed. He immediately called the practitioner and thanked him for his help and also apologized for his own negligence. They both were happy and grateful. The whole family rejoiced over the quick recovery he had had when he proved that by turning from sense to Soul he was free.
I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for class instruction, and also for the privilege of serving in the activities of several branch churches, all of which brought more spiritual growth in the understanding and application of the truth.
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for all she endured to give us this religion of Love, of Life, of Truth, which frees us from human bondage. — Yardley, Pennsylvania.
