O taste and see that the Lord is good

From the June 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him" (Ps. 34:8). Our Father-Mother God has been good to me. Even when I did not know God, at least when I had no true concept of Him, Principle, Love, certainly searched me out and caused the light of Christian Science to shine on my pathway.

The same Principle has protected me and, on occasions when I lost sight of its presence, has repaired the resultant damage through Christ, Truth. For example, a number of years ago, before receiving the blessings of class instruction, I experienced a physical difficulty which threw me violently on the sidewalk against an open basement steel door. Some five hours later I regained consciousness in an emergency hospital. The nurse and the attendant were greatly surprised to see life manifested again. As I spoke with them I became conscious of severe pain in my shoulder and back; dullness and other symptoms were present also. The attendant informed me that I had had an attack of epilepsy and had broken my shoulder when I fell against the door. I knew that this was not the truth, even though the evidence to the contrary was pronounced.

I was grateful for the love that I knew these attendants reflected. They graciously slung my arm to ease the weight on my broken and dislocated shoulder, telling me to go to my family physician at once. A statement of Mrs. Eddy's which I had read on page 132 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" filled my thought, and I told them that God was my physician. Upon learning that I was a Christian Scientist they said I should see a practitioner immediately. Had this occurred a few years earlier I would surely have been in the care of a doctor, for the setting and healing of broken bones was the one thing I was most reluctant to accept in the teachings of Christian Science.
