"According to Christian Science, perfection is normal,—not miraculous," states our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on on page 104 of "Miscellaneous Writings." Since my introduction to Christian Science, it has been my greatest desire to prove the correctness of this declaration. If man, God's likeness, is perfect, then sin, pain, or discord of any name or nature has no abiding place in his consciousness.
My first healing came when I had read only a few chapters of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The discord was a stomach ailment which several doctors, including One specialist, had treated unsuccessfully. Having arrived in Manila for a tenure of several years in government service, I experienced a feeling of hopelessness concerning my condition; hence the suggestion of a friend that I try Christian Science was accepted, although not with full confidence in its efficacy. The healing came so quickly that I was amazed; instead of eating the foods which the dietitians had prescribed for me, I awoke to find that I was eating with relish everything set before me.
On another occasion the opportunity to prove man's perfection was afforded me when an ankle had apparently been dislocated. I jumped from a manger onto the stall floor, where a thin layer of straw covered a warped board. My foot alighted on this and was wrenched violently. The pain was intense. For a few moments I sat on the floor and repeated all the remembered quotations from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings applicable to injuries of any nature. Then I declared that sprains, dislocations, and fractures had no place in the perfect man of God's creating. Yes, perfection is normal, as Mrs. Eddy declares, decidedly not miraculous; furthermore, Christ Jesus said (Luke 10: 19), "Nothing shall by any means hurt you." Relying upon the truth of man's real status, I arose and walked out of the stable. I continued to walk, bearing the pain with repeated declarations of truth, which, as I was confident would be the case, quickly silenced the false evidence of the physical senses, and the ankle healed.
