EXCHANGE THE HUMAN CONCEPT FOR THE DIVINE

From the August 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science brings to all men, regardless of color, nationality, race, or creed, God's revelation of Himself. To understand this divine Science the honest seeker of Truth must patiently persist in his study, as Isaiah counsels, with "precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little" (28:10). If he follows through with this procedure, he will find that everything pertaining to his normal welfare will be more harmonious when he learns to exchange the false human concept for the divine or right idea. The operation of Truth through the right idea is effective even though Truth is not fully perceived.

In his teaching and healing work with others the Master taught the logic of accepting the spiritual fact because it is the truth, even though not fully understood. For instance, the man at the pool of Bethesda, who had been in bondage to sickness for thirty-eight years, was healed when Jesus exchanged the false concept for the divine. It was evident to Jesus that the man's condition had been brought on by sin, but when Jesus told him to take up his bed and to walk, the man accepted the truth and obeyed. Later, when he met this same man in the synagogue, Jesus virtually told him not to go back to the false, sinning sense of things, if he would remain whole.

Mortals do not have to lie forever in the beds of their own making, or accept what their ancestors have outlined, because Christian Science is dispelling the myth of materiality. This Christ Science is speaking to human consciousness today, analyzing and exposing material sense as a false belief, a delusion of personal sense, as powerless, when so understood, to hold anyone in bondage. It is telling mankind how to rise in the strength of Spirit regardless of the mortal seeming and throw off the shackling beliefs of the flesh. Thus, and only thus, will the illusion of materiality as objectified by mortal mind disappear from men's thought as substance—either to rest upon or to weigh them down.
