CHILDLIKE TRUST AND THE NEW BIRTH

From the August 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"I Thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes" (Matt. 11:25). Christian Scientists can reiterate these words of the Master's because they have proved the value of a childlike trust in the divine Mind, or creator. "The wise and prudent" could mean those who are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight. The wisdom of God excels the prudence of men. Jesus emphasized the value of childlikeness when he told his disciples (Matt. 18:3), "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

Why did the Master speak of his followers as children or even little children? Perhaps because from the standpoint of his supreme understanding they were but infants in their knowledge of the Christ. His attitude toward them, however, was not one of patronage. He treated them as a mother would her family, administering to the sick, comforting the sorrowing, giving the fearful ones assurance of safety, and leaving with them a perpetual memory of spiritual peace. In his words and works we feel the spirit of the Comforter. "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem" (Isa. 66:13).

When we first accept the teachings of Christian Science we are as little children in our understanding of God and man. A new outlook has unfolded, a fresh way of life has been revealed. The great change of thought which begins to take place through our acceptance of Science destroys many false theories of life and reveals the spiritual idea, man. We learn that there is a divine basis of being and that we are not subject to the frailties of a fleshly existence, but in reality are indestructible spiritual ideas, rooted in divine Love, expressing Life, maintained by Truth, and governed by the wisdom of Mind.
