When hit by an automobile, I sustained, among other injuries, a broken collarbone and shoulder. Knowing that Christian Science is the best surgeon and that divine Mind makes all needed adjustments, I accepted no medical aid. I am grateful that the practitioner on whom I called for help and the two Christian Scientists who took me to their home after the accident were in complete accord with my wish to rely wholly upon God, the great Physician.
When fear and doubt assailed me, one of the hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal No. 95), beginning with the words, "He leadeth me," were a comfort and a source of guidance for my thoughts and actions. The many references to place in Mrs. Eddy's writings were helpful; and when I clearly realized that the real man cannot know any displacement because he is at one with God, I stopped worrying about the outcome of the problem and was able to resist the temptation to constantly look at my shoulder to note its progress. At the end of two and a half weeks I was back at my desk using a typewriter, and by the end of the month the shoulder was so well that I could again raise my arm above my head and use it normally.
An injury of the head, which subjected me to dizziness and occasional fainting, was much slower in yielding to Christian Science treatment. This I attribute in large part to the fact that I permitted myself to be swayed by human opinions and suggestions that it was right for me to claim compensation from the man whose car had knocked me down. I did not have him arrested the night the accident occurred, but I later engaged the services of a lawyer to find him and present my bill.
