WHILE in the interest of preserving world peace it may seem imperative at this stage of progress for a nation to maintain strength which equally balances that of certain other world powers, the time will ultimately come when only one power, God, divine Mind, must be acknowledged as supreme over all. The power of God, Christian Science makes clear, is indivisible. It cannot be divided and part pitted against part. God's power, being one, will eventually control all nations and peoples in harmonious relationships one with another. Isaiah promises that in the last days "nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more" (2:4).
Speaking of her motives, Mary Baker Eddy declares in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 104): "I will love, if another hates. I will gain a balance on the side of good, my true being. This alone gives me the forces of God wherewith to overcome all error."
To return love for hate and to "gain a balance on the side of good" are not inconsistent with wise human action taken to protect and preserve a government or nation dedicated to the establishment of peace, justice, and freedom. To hate one's enemy places one in a worldly weak position from which to endeavor to defeat one's enemy. It tends to blind one to the discernment of the plans of one's adversary.
