"God exists now. He is right here with you to help you. He knows what you need. He is your best friend. Trust Him." Words to this effect came to me like a message direct from God over twenty-five years ago at a time of great need. A promising career in an advertising agency seemed to be threatened by a new high-ranking official. Ideas such as those that had previously given me two large salary raises were no longer successful; my confidence had left me, and I thought of myself as a failure.
Some years before this, while in college, I was healed through the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner of the results of a heavy blow on the head. This treatment was obtained for me by my mother after medical help and a chiropractor had failed to give relief. Despite the efficacy of Christian Science in dealing with this situation, I gave no further thought to it until I became ill with an unusual type of pneumonia in 1933. At this time the executive in the advertising agency who had hired me came to see me and left a gift of a copy of the textbook by Mrs. Eddy.
This gift remained in the bookcase until just before Christmas. Before turning to it, I had walked "through the valley of the shadow of death" (Ps. 23:4) for six months; undergone a bronchostomy; returned to my work to face a new and hostile superior; resorted to liquor for escape from fears and worries; and reached the decision that the world would not miss me.
