SENSE TESTIMONY IS UNREAL

From the September 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE tremendous technological advances accomplished by physical science have brought mankind into an age of atomic power and missiles and possible trips to the moon. Earthbound beliefs are being eliminated. Any attempt to overcome completely the beliefs of matter with material theories is, however, destined to defeat. According to Christian Science, mankind will never lay off matter's limitations until men are able spiritually to understand that matter is unreal. Any premises that include matter as substance must be false; therefore the conclusions must be false also.

We must learn how to protect ourselves in all instances against the temptation to accept and agree with the testimony of the material senses. The Bible teaches that God is Spirit. His creation, man and the universe, must, therefore, be spiritual. Since God, Spirit, cannot be discerned by the material senses, to limit ourselves to sense testimony would deny the presence of God. Nor can we behold the real man in matter, although the senses would have us believe that if man exists at all, he must be material.

If Christ Jesus had believed that sense testimony is real and conclusive, he would have been no more effective as a Saviour than were other religionists of his day. When he responded to the inquiry of John the Baptist whether or not he was the expected Saviour, he said to John's messengers, "Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached" (Luke 7:22). Jesus' deeds must have proved to John that he was the Messiah, that his power to correct and change the testimony of the material senses was not human but divine.
