Testimonies of Healing

I am deeply grateful to Christian Science...

From the May 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am deeply grateful to Christian Science for the many blessings it has brought to me. My greatest blessing is having been reared in it and having the privilege of attending Sunday School. My earliest recollection of healing took place in the Sunday School.

One Sunday, after being in class awhile, I became ill. Instead of getting better, I got worse, and my only thought was, "If I could just lie down somewhere, I'd be all right." But this wasn't possible. After I had struggled for a few minutes the angel thought came to me, "What are you doing sitting in class listening to error when you should be listening to Truth?"

When I turned my thought from error to Truth, I had an instantaneous healing. I was not at all surprised at this, for in looking back over my years of growing up I have realized that I expected Christian Science to heal.

Later, in my early teens, I noticed that warts were beginning to grow on my hands. They did not come all at once, but over a period of about two years. They were very unsightly and sometimes painful. At this time I had thirty-five of them on my hands, and on the day I graduated from elementary school I noticed one forming on my mouth. This awakened me to what was needed.

Although at this time I was not studying systematically as I do now, I knew that I could turn to the truth, learned in the Sunday School, and make the demonstration. All this time kind friends would tell me how I could get rid of these warts in one material way or another, and I am grateful that I did not try any of their suggested remedies.

I decided not to look at my hands for several days but to continue to hold to the truth of my being as God's perfect idea. Four or five days later the thought came to me, "Now you can look," and I did. Every wart was completely gone, and there wasn't a single trace of one anywhere. I was extremely grateful to be rid of such an ugly picture which was never in accord with God's image and likeness.

Although my husband was not a Scientist when I married him, he did attend church with me occasionally. After being married almost a year, during which time I held to the thought that the truth would be revealed to him in God's own way, he had an experience which brought him into Christian Science.

One Saturday he told me that he had suffered all week from a painful condition in his right side. He felt he must do something about it because he had become very fearful. We talked it over, and he decided he should see a doctor. The appointment was arranged for a Sunday at the doctor's home. My husband was told that he had appendicitis and should go into the hospital on Monday to have an operation. We were planning to move into another apartment the following Saturday and had much work to do. The doctor told him he must go home and rest and not do work of any kind. My husband did not commit himself to having the operation.

After leaving the doctor's home, we again talked things over, and I told him I should like to have him talk to a practitioner before making up his mind, and he consented to do so. We stopped at a practitioner's; and after we had talked to her for some time, the fear was not so great, and he was willing to have her treat him through prayer. On Monday he returned to his office and did not miss a day. Each day the fear and pain lessened, and by Friday the healing was complete. We moved on Saturday, as scheduled, and all was well. This took place over thirty years ago, and there has never been a return of this condition.

My husband has since become a member of The Mother Church and a branch church and is a faithful worker for the Cause of Christian Science. We have reared two boys in Christian Science, and I am grateful that they had the privilege of attending the Sunday School and also a school for the children of Christian Scientists. They in turn have married Scientists, and all are active church workers. What a joy it is to see our young people take hold of this wonderful truth and demonstrate it in their own lives!

There have been so many blessings in our home. So-called children's diseases, though not many came into our experience, have been healed quickly with the help of a practitioner or through our own prayerful knowing of the truth. When the need for finding a home presented itself on several occasions, the demonstrations were made step by step when we were willing to listen to God's directing. Abundant supply has ever been present because we have acknowledged that supply is spiritual.

Through the years, I have been striving to love God supremely and have been serving Him only. False traits of character have fallen away when I have been able to see man as the image of Love. Through consistent study of the Bible and all the writings of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, self-will has yielded to God's will, and I am ever conscious of my love for God and man.

I am grateful for all the activities provided by The Mother Church for our growth in the understanding of Christian Science. The periodicals are a constant source of inspiration. Class instruction and our yearly association meeting are wonderful stepping-stones, and my desire is to serve God and the Cause of Christian Science and to love my neighbor as myself.—
