GOD'S SUSTAINING POWER

From the May 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Are the pressures and demands of living in this present-day world more than many individuals can take unless they resort to sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and frequent rest cures? Mrs. Eddy asks (Science and Health, p. 394): "Are material means the only refuge from fatal chances? Is there no divine permission to conquer discord of every kind with harmony, with Truth and Love?"

The Bible is filled with promises of God's love and sustaining power. The problems that present themselves to us, over which we express tension and anxiety, are really opportunities for us to prove that God is constantly pouring out His blessings in abundance. Thereby we find serenity and peace, and our horizons are broadened in ways that we could not have imagined. With positive and reassuring words our Leader states (ibid., Pref., p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."

As Christ Jesus went about teaching and healing in the towns along the shore of the Galilean Sea and in the hills of Judea, he said at one point to those who had come to hear him (Matt. 11:28), "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." He was appealing to men to turn to the Christ, Truth—to the consciousness of their own identity as the beloved sons of the Father. He knew that this truth would act as a law to bring them peace and rest.
