UNSELFING MORTALITY

From the May 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"He who gains self-knowledge, self-control, and the kingdom of heaven within himself, within his own consciousness, is saved through Christ, Truth." These words of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, found on page 161 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" are a call to arms. And she continues, "Mortals must drink sufficiently of the cup of their Lord and Master to unself mortality and to destroy its erroneous claims."

Christ Jesus was counseling his listeners to "unself mortality" when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32), for was he not saying in effect, Know yourself as God's image, as Spirit's perfect idea, forever inseparable from Mind, and you will be saved from error's claims?

These statements pose a daily challenge for every student of Christian Science. The student should early learn what his faults are; then he should realize that it is the false identification of himself as corporeal and mortal which keeps him in bondage, whereas the establishing of his true identity as Mind's immortal idea brings release.
