Christian Science was first introduced to our family eleven years ago. After reading the periodicals given to us my husband and I decided to enroll the children in the Sunday School without delay.
At this time our elder daughter, then aged twelve, seemed to fidget a lot, and the headmistress of the school our daughter attended phoned and advised me to take the child to the doctor, as the girl found difficulty in holding a pen or pencil and was unable to write. Because we were still new in Science, I complied with the school authorities' request. The doctor immediately placed the child in hospital, where they removed her tonsils and tried various other treatments. However, she became progressively worse. I approached the friend who had introduced us to Christian Science, and she advised me to speak to the child's Sunday School teacher about it. This I did, and the teacher lovingly offered to help me. She told me that she would help me through prayer, for she could not treat the child while she was under medical treatment.
After the child had been in hospital for a month, the doctor told me to take her home and to arrange to have her sent to a farm up country for six months. He said that as far as he could see there was nothing medicine could do to help our daughter. He said that with fresh air and quiet she might regain enough of her health to enable her to receive further schooling. By this time the child could no longer speak properly. She had to lean against another person or a wall for support to be able to walk. She had no control over her legs, and she could not hold anything in her hands without dropping it. It was not a pretty picture, but both my husband and I were now determined to rely on Christian Science for healing.
