In the twenty-first chapter of John we are privileged to share in a dialogue between Christ Jesus and Simon Peter, in which the Master gave his disciple an important directive. "Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs." John 21:15
In speaking of his lambs Jesus was undoubtedly referring to the innocent, receptive, pure thought always so evident in little children, for whom he had so much affection. Like Jesus, our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science, loved children and well understood the need for feeding them spiritually. As an integral part of her complete educational system she founded the Christian Science Sunday School and provided in broad but definite terms for the teaching that was to go on there. If ever there was a place provided for the feeding of His lambs, it is the Christian Science Sunday School.
Mrs. Eddy certainly must have realized that the Sunday School pupil of today is the church worker and practitioner of tomorrow, and that his spiritual enthusiasm for Christian Science would depend on how well he was loved and inspired and educated in his early years. It is noteworthy that many of the key positions in The Mother Church today, positions that require a deep love for and an understanding of Christian Science, are occupied by men and women who were themselves instructed in the Christian Science Sunday School.
