During the summer, a few years ago, a disturbing condition appeared on my hands. I dealt with it according to what I had been taught in Christian Science but not, I'm sorry to say, with my whole heart. The trouble began to spread and soon involved both arms and legs. I began to study the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, with more diligence. I had no doubt that God could heal me, and I refused to take any medical action, although strongly advised to do this.
Then one morning I awoke to find that the condition had spread to my face and that my eyes were swollen. I had a few moments of fear, and then as I turned to God, the fear was replaced by calm. I felt that this was the time to take a radical stand for Truth and for spiritual healing.
Great concern was expressed by my family, but assuring them that as God's child I was in the best of care, I got them off to school and work. I then telephoned my mother, who had been aware of the condition and had encouraged me many times during the previous months. She vigorously denied the reality of the facial condition I described to her and assured me that since God had created man perfect, Godlike, no child of His could exhibit such ungodlike qualities as disfigurement and pain.
