In 1949, when I was a young mother of three, we moved to a farming community. The nearest Christian Science church was one hundred miles away. My husband was not a Christian Scientist but was supportive of my consistent reliance on its teachings and agreed that our children could be raised with this demonstrable Science. The children and I daily studied the Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly, and on Sunday read it aloud together. We turned wholeheartedly to God in all sorts of circumstances.
In the first year of our study and application of Christian Science, our eldest daughter was completely healed of recurring attacks of croup and, later, of severe nosebleeds. Many years afterward, the night before she was to leave home for college she seemed unable to walk. Using the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I studied and prayed for hours. I realized my need was to see God as her only real parent. God is both Father and Mother of us all. I knew His care for my daughter was constant. When I yielded to these truths, I found I was able to obey Jesus' command to those who watched Lazarus walk out of the tomb (John 11:44): "Loose him, and let him go." The next day this daughter was completely healed of the difficulty, able to walk freely and even to climb several hundred stairs while sightseeing in the city where she was to begin college.
One time, a severe throat condition made it seem impossible for this same daughter to return to her studies. But this was healed through Science in just one week. The healing came when she pondered these words from Hymn No. 412 in the Christian Science Hymnal:
