The importance of your practice

From the May 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Concert musicians are selective and exclusive about their instruments. "But you know," said violinist Eugene Fodor in an interview, "the important thing is still the player and the life he lends to music. Without that life, the violin is just another instrument."
Oklahoma City Times, September 13, 1979

In a manner of speaking, Christian healing can be viewed as an instrument, too. But it is not "just another instrument." Ideally, Christian healing is applicable to each individual, infinitely adaptable to every need. The power of Christ, Truth, restores and maintains health, harmony, and holiness on earth. Our every effort to employ it increases our understanding of God and enables us to help ourselves and others. Whoever devotes his life to demonstrating the verity of man as God's image can bring out divine reality in the entire reaches of his thought, and this will permeate his whole experience.

Consistent results are to the practitioner of Christian Science what consistently good performances are to the concert musician. But he must not only love the effects of practice, he must love God, the source of the good performances! In metaphysics as in music, there is a definite ratio of performance to practice. When asked how he got to be a superstar and how he stays one, baritone Sherrill Milnes "doesn't even mention voice," according to interviewer W. U. McCoy. "He talks about desire, commitment, a believability stemming from internal conviction, about a drive to communicate." McCoy reports Milnes's contention that "performances are only the tip of the iceberg compared to the work involved."
