THE CHURCH IN ACTION

Church: manifesting the light of Christ

From the October 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the cardinal themes of "The Church in Action" section is the healing role of the individual church member. The following article develops this thought.

One Wednesday evening, a woman suffering acute pain walked into a Christian Science church for the first time and left an hour later freed from all pain. A young man studying to be a physician visited the same church another Wednesday evening and spontaneously stood to testify to the most comforting sense of peace he had ever experienced.

In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which guides mankind in the understanding and practice of spiritual healing, Mary Baker Eddy explains what is at work in such experiences. She writes: "The manifestation of God through mortals is as light passing through the window-pane. The light and the glass never mingle, but as matter, the glass is less opaque than the walls." Science and Health, p. 295
