What can you do for youth?

From the October 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do we realize what a privilege it is to teach young people the truth that frees? We obey the commandment "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy" Ex. 20:8.—in fact, we ideally observe the sabbath— when we serve as a teacher in the Christian Science Sunday School.

Sunday School can be likened to a feast, where each one contributes the food he has prepared. Little pupils bring their fresh, receptive thoughts, the wrappers of which may sometimes appear to be fear or distractions or noisy self-importance. But these are usually disposed of quickly by the loving Sunday School teacher, who looks underneath to see the good inside and brings it out to be shared.

Adolescence, with its adjustments required by the change from childhood to adulthood, has never been heralded as an easy period. But add to that the lack of discipline in many homes and schools today; the violence, fear, and rebellion against authority; the severe confusion and the perpetual availability of mind-altering drugs; and finally the suicides, which statistics indicate are on the increase among teen-agers.
