The Bible tells us of God: "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he" (Deuteronomy). In Christian Science we learn that God is the one creator, divine Principle.
I was brought up in Christian Science, and we experienced many healings in our family as I grew up. But after I married and had children of my own, I gradually slipped away from relying on Christian Science. Eventually I stopped the practice of Science entirely. I turned to medical help whenever my children or I became ill. I also accumulated habits that are "socially accepted," such as drinking alcohol, using recreational drugs and profanity, and relaxed morals.
During this period I injured my back. The doctors who treated me told me the injury wasn't bad enough to require surgery but that I would need to do special exercises, stop wearing high heels, and be very careful when lifting or moving anything that weighed more than fifteen pounds. Over the next several years I lived with fear of the back trouble. Attacks that would leave me incapacitated for five or six days resulted from the simplest movements. On car trips, I would have to take extensive breaks from sitting, or one leg would become numb and my back would give me a great deal of pain. I wore flat shoes always, even though this did not keep me from suffering these painful attacks.
