I am Robert's wife. I had been raised in a devout Christian home, and study of the Bible had taught me to love God. But when I reached the age of eighteen I started to question my understanding of Him. I was attending a missionary Bible seminary at the time, and the first year of school had included the study of the New Testament. This should have been a joyous time—one I had been looking forward to—but as the semester progressed I began to feel unsure of my purpose, and started to question the theology I was being taught. My questions about God remained unanswered, and I soon left the school.
For the next several years I really did not have any religious convictions, and it was not until I married and had a family that I was forced to make a commitment. Because I believed a spiritual education was as important as an academic one, I wanted our three children to attend Sunday School; and since my religious training had not met my needs, I quite naturally took them to the church of their dad, a Christian Scientist. As he has explained, my husband had been healed as a boy, through Christian Science treatment. And it was when our children brought home questions and comments about their Sunday School teaching that I realized I needed to learn more about Christian Science.
My growth in spiritual understanding can best be described as gradual. I started reading Science and Health (written by Mrs. Eddy) and attending Christian Science church services. As I look back, I recognize that the truth was in action in my life. I am in awe of the power of God —in Psalm 117, we read, "For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever" (verse 2).
