WRITING TO HEAL

Writing as giving

From the June 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Writing for the Christian Science periodicals begins with inspiration—inspiration that comes out of prayer and sincerely striving to live our lives on the basis of the spiritual facts of God and man. As our love for God grows, our love for mankind is enlarged, our gratitude increases, and we feel the desire to share the great blessings of Christian Science. We are ready to write for the periodicals!

This doesn't mean that we have solved all of our problems or that we have obtained some saintly status. What it does mean is that we are, as Paul described it in his letter to the Philippians, pressing "toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus," Phil. 3:14. and we are willing to share some of our footsteps along the way.

I have found it helpful to keep a notebook of thoughts that come to me as I read the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly) or as I pray or that come suddenly as I go about my daily affairs. These thoughts inspire me in my practice of Christian Science, and often they find their way into articles. If I don't write them down, I sometimes find that they are lost, and so I have learned to be "faithful over a few things," Matt. 25:21. as Christ Jesus taught.
