In 1892, when my grandmother was twelve years old, her parents were told by her physician that she was not strong enough to recover from typhoid fever. In their time of need, a business associate provided them with some leaflets by Mrs. Eddy. Her mother read these to her over and over. When the doctor said the end was near, her mother came to her bed and began to repeat to her the truths she had been reading. She said, "Carrie, God is your Life." My grandmother told me she had been helpless to respond until she heard this. "To these thoughts, I could respond," she said. In a short time her fever was gone, and she recovered rapidly. The physician proclaimed it a miracle.
This "miracle" brought my family into Christian Science. My grandmother lived to be a hearty octogenarian. For many years she was a Christian Science practitioner in a small farming community. Drawn by her spirituality, the neighbors beat a path to her door for healing. I grew up thinking the whole world was made up of Christian Scientists, because our entire neighborhood was!
Our family is now in our sixth generation of reliance on God for healing. My husband and I found it to be indispensable in raising our two sons to manhood.
