Some of the most rewarding demonstrations of the practical application of Christian Science in my life have been business related. My career with the auto industry closed with my simultaneously managing two large manufacturing plants that employed over four thousand people.
At one point, I was faced with what I thought was a crisis in my own personal concept of progression. I was suddenly forced to transfer to another division after spending twenty-seven years on "comfortable" assignments. I had resisted the move vigorously because the new assignment was to manage the shutdown of a plant location where employee-employer relations were so full of hatred that people even physically fought among themselves. This adversarial relationship had existed for nearly thirty-five years within these plants.
Faced with this, I repeated aloud from Psalm 91, "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust" (verse 2). I also studied Mary Baker Eddy's statement: "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 393). What an opportunity to prove the healing power of God's loving care!
