The Journal asked
, Manager of The Christian Science Publishing Society, for his comments on the 125th anniversary of the publication of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the major work of the Journal's founder, Mary Baker Eddy. This magazine was the first periodical founded by Mary Baker Eddy. At the time of its launch in 1883, Mrs. Eddy's new book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, had been in print for just eight years, since 1875, and was provoking interest, dialogue, challenge, and results. These results were confirming Mrs. Eddy's purpose in writing Science and Health, which she describes in its Preface: "In the spirit of Christ's charity,—as one who 'hopeth all things, endureth all things,' and is joyful to bear consolation to the sorrowing and healing to the sick,—she commits these pages to honest seekers for Truth."
This book, from its very beginning, consoled, healed, and answered the quest of honest seekers. Those whose lives were touched wanted to know more. What had taken place in their thinking and living? How had such a transformation taken place? How, from the depth of sorrow and despair, had there come a rebirth of hope and accomplishment? How had their sickness given place to health?
