Before I started studying Christian Science I always thought that purpose was something you had to obtain—like that "one pearl of great price" Matt. 13:46. Jesus talked about, except that there's literally only one. It seemed to me that finding my purpose was the event that would change my life forever. Boom—suddenly I'd have direction.
As I've read Science and Health, though, I've come to realize that purpose isn't that at all. In fact, I've discovered that it's not something apart from me, it's within me, because purpose is all about expressing your God-given qualities in whatever way is needed at the moment. It means living the way God made you—as His agent.
What that means for my purpose is that it's dynamic. It changes. It's not about my occupation or my background or even where I want to go. It's about seeing the need for joy in a situation and living joy. It's about recognizing a need for comfort and being that expression of divine Love.
