I HADN'T HAD NEW GLASSES for three years or more, so last April I went to get my eyes examined by a well-established ophthalmologist. After the exam, he told me that I had cataracts in both eyes. He said that if my vision could not be satisfactorily corrected with new lenses then I should consider cataract surgery. The optometrist in his office also found cataracts in my eyes. She told me that although she could correct my vision to some degree with new lenses, the cataracts were of a size that I could not legally drive because my corrected vision would still be below the minimum requirements for a license. She recommended that I see a specialist about having cataract surgery, so I made an appointment with an eye surgeon.
In the meantime, I had reservations about going ahead with surgery. I had read about a quick healing of cataracts in the chapter "Fruitage" in Science and Health (p. 607), and I felt that maybe this would be a good opportunity to prove that the divine Science taught in this book was also applicable to my situation. I cancelled the appointment with the eye surgeon and contacted a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to give me Christian Science treatment. Our prayers were based on the fact that God is divine Love.
I knew that a loving God would not and did not create disease and therefore cataracts were no part of my true identity as God's reflection. And I felt certain that this truth would heal me. In her book Miscellaneous Writings, Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "Thought imbued with purity, Truth, and Love, instructed in the Science of metaphysical healing, is the most potent and desirable remedial agent on the earth" (p. 4).
