I HAD BEEN MARRIED for about three years when I consulted a gynecologist because I was experiencing very irregular menstrual cycles. She prescribed fertility pills to restore normalcy and mentioned to my husband and me that with these pills I could easily become pregnant. We were fine with that.
I began taking the pills as prescribed, and a few months later my periods became regular. But I never got pregnant. Because of this, the doctor said that I would probably not be able to conceive. We didn't have additional tests done, and after a few months I discontinued taking the fertility pills. My husband and I continued to hope that time would bring about the desired pregnancy.
Two more years went by, I finished my graduate degree, and my husband and I moved to Venezuela. With each passing day, I saw my chances of getting pregnant diminish. At that time, my thought was totally absorbed with ovulation cycles and determining which days I would be most fertile.
