SQUARE ONE

From the May 2007 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A NUMBER OF ARTICLES IN THIS JOURNAL DEAL WITH FINDING OR perceiving or recognizing God, or His/Her presence in our lives. It's there to become tangibly aware of, even if it takes a while to realize.

As a child raised in a fundamentalist church, I learned about Jesus. I was told Jesus was God. This was a little puzzling to me, though, because I didn't see how God could be Jesus and Himself at the same time.

As a teen, I sometimes attended churches that had more ritual in their services, and I thought perhaps the candles and choir and the splendor of it all would lead me toward God----help me understand who He was.

Later in life, in the service, for example, I explored more of an Eastern approach to spiritual understanding, a more mystical approach to the understanding of "reality," although I eventually abandoned that to become settled in as more of an agnostic. A believer, but in what I didn't exactly know.

In my early twenties I was introduced to Christian Science. It made sense to me. It seemed reasonable to think that God was divine Principle or Soul or Spirit or Mind or Life or Truth or Love. And, as the Science of Christianity teaches, I learned that we all express those synonyms for God. That was 40-some years ago.

Today, through the many healings I've had and the spiritual understanding of God that this Science has given me, I still stand in awe of this truth that Mary Baker Eddy discovered. More than ever, it provides inspiration, healing, and an outlook on life that makes sense, is profound, and gives me comfort, day in, day out.

Enjoy your read of this Journal, which reminds us how very close God's presence is to each of us, His beloved children.
