Thirty years ago, when my son was a toddler, he was diagnosed with asthma. Over a period of several years, there were repeated hospital stays for him and he was on daily medications.
When he started kindergarten, I became friends with a family of Christian Scientists, and I soon took up the study, started attending the local Christian Science branch church, and my son began attending Christian Science Sunday School. At first, I didn’t feel it was wise or safe to stop the medication for the asthma, but after about a year of seeing many times how God heals through prayer, I decided to pray for my son.
A few months later, he had a bad asthma attack in the night. I prayed for him as best as I knew how at the time. I was new to using the Lord’s Prayer with its spiritual interpretation given in Science and Health, and I remember reciting it out loud. I surrendered any sense of fear and felt God’s ever-present love. Within minutes the attack ended. And my son never had another asthma attack.
