Inspiration brings quick turnaround

From the July 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I would like to share two experiences where angel messages, or ideas from God, have blessed me in moments of need.

When I joined the United States Army, I had to pass a physical fitness test before I went off to boot camp. I needed a job, so I signed up for early entrance, which gave me only one week to prepare for the test. I prepared as much as I could in the time that I had, but I didn’t know how I was going to run a mile in eight minutes and 30 seconds.

The day of the test arrived and my recruiter drove me to a long stretch of sidewalk. At the halfway point I knew I needed to pick up my pace. I was pretty tired and was about to start walking (before the test I hadn’t run much more than a half a mile without having to stop and walk), which would have ruined my time. Whenever I’d run during training for soccer in high school, I’d pushed myself through sheer human will to go a little farther and a little faster, but I’d never lasted much longer. I was tired of this approach. I would rather have walked than forced myself to run more—a humble mental state that I’ve found essential in all of my Army physical fitness tests since this first one.
