When I accepted an offer to study abroad at a university in England for my undergraduate education, I was thrilled to know there was a Christian Science church in the university’s city. I attended the church’s Sunday School every week, and quite often I was the only student present. Since I’d attended a large and active Sunday School and church with my family in the United States, the opportunity to independently practice Christian Science in another country proved to be a new and enlarging experience of great spiritual growth.
The church quickly became a grounding rock and my home-away-from-home. The members lovingly reached out to me in various supportive ways, such as regularly welcoming me into their homes for meals and inviting me out with them to local events. The Sunday School superintendent frequently drove me to and from Sunday School and Wednesday testimony meetings, and I developed a close rapport with my Sunday School teacher, as I was the only student in her class. I became a member of the church in my second year, and I happily served on several committees throughout my time at university.
